Karate Online Classes – For People Who Cannot Attend Personal Instruction Courses

Karate is one of the most popular forms of martial arts.

Those that have taken the plunge have found that the lessons and philosophy of karate impacts on every sector in their lives. For people who are unable to attend formal classes at a Dojo or Karate School modern technology has supplied the tools for karate online classes.

Being able to learn the various kick and hand movements, terminology and philosophical lessons by means of video instruction online is proving a popular alternative method to attending formal classes.

There are various schools giving instruction all with a common basic foundation of teaching numerous hand and feet methods that can be used defensively.

Some styles of karate are Kyokushin, Tang Soo Do, Bushido, Shotokan, etc. Online sites carry instruction for beginners and progress through to instructor classes. Teaching katas, kumite, kihon and sparring techniques online tutorage is intensive, focused and comprehensive.

Why Karate Online Classes?

There are numerous reasons why people do not go for personal instruction.

They may not have a karate school near their home or they may be unable to afford the class fees. With this unique method of instruction a person can however still learn the basics of ‘the way of empty hands’ self-defense for free in the comfort of their home.

Around the world people who have tried this route are reporting positively on their progress to date.

What To Look Out For In Karate Online Classes

It is important that one establish the credentials of a particular online karate school before taking instruction.

There are registered schools that give well formulated instruction in easy to follow steps. Look for an online Dojo that also arranges weekend camps which will enable one to participate in group classes, fine-tune their technique and learn the art of sparring.

Tools You’ll Need For Your Karate Online Classes

When starting off it is recommended that a person invest in a punch bag or some similar object that can be suspended, punched and that one can attack from all sides when sparring.

A horizontal pole placed at waist height of the learner helps to teach them the heights they should reach when practicing either a side or back kick.

If possible it is recommended that a video be taken at regular intervals. This footage can be viewed to determine progress and to establish any problems in their style and execution of the stylized karate steps, thrusts and kicks.

Basics You Should Be Aware Of

It is recommended that one start with the basics and familiarizes themselves with the terminology and sequence of moves.

Progressing to the next level of instruction should only be done once a lesson has been thoroughly learnt, understood and the karate moves perfected.

Taking instruction online by oneself is in fact an excellent lesson in self-discipline which is the fundamental philosophy of karate.

The body is often stretched to its limits and stretching exercises are therefore important before vigorous training commences.

It is important to stretch slowly and with care to encourage the muscles to relax. These graceful fluid movements are in themselves an excellent form of exercise and keep the body supple irrespective of the person’s age.

There are a number of basic punches and striking moves ranging from short sharp jabs with the fist or palm heel. The kick techniques include front, back, side and stomping kicks that aim for the groin, knee and abdomen.

Once the pupil has mastered theses various moves they are put together forming the entire sequence of blocking, kicking and thrusting known as a kata. To qualify for each belt students are required to learn a particular set of movements that are collectively called a kata. Together these form a defense and response sequence to warding off an attack.

Blocking movements that with time and practice become quick reflexes and packed with power will enable a person to incapacitate their attacker. The strikes taught focus on the opponent’s legs and arms.

There are a number of close-hand blocks ranging from head to stomach. The open-handed and wrist blocks are also taught. Once these movements have been learnt and repeatedly practiced to reach perfection one can move on to the offensive moves.

Children Can Benefit Too

Especially for children it has become a boon to learn karate online.

It is an activity that can be practiced in the safety of their home environment and is also an excellent form of exercise. It teaches self-discipline and is considered a great character builder.

The process of learning is structured, requires self control and a cool demeanor. Every member in the family can benefit from online karate classes as physical training is combined with the mental discipline philosophies.

The Ranking System

Students start with a white belt that is bought with their karate outfit.

As they begin to improve and pass various levels of grading they receive different colored belts ending with a black belt. Attaining a black belt is for some people just the beginning of their karate journey as there are many further levels of expertise that they can attempt.

Reaching the level where they can train for a first stage Dan is for the serious karate devotee the ultimate achievement after many years of training and hard work.

Kyokushin Karate – A Popular Choice

The Kyokushin method is practiced globally and considered to consist of a number of the most dominate moves in karate with all unnecessary and arty steps and movements removed.

This method has produced some of the best fighters globally and the base of their technique is formed around the fight and not being pretty to watch.

In Conclusion

Considered by many to far transcend sport and revered as an art form karate online classes opens a new world of self improvement and overall good health. Males and females of all ages can greatly benefit by becoming exponents of this form of martial art. Both mentally and physically challenging it could prove to be a life changing experience.

So, you’re interested in martial arts, and you’re wondering how to learn karate.

Well, there are several methods to use. There are books, DVDs, websites, clubs, and classes.

But which one is right for you?

Let’s discuss each one, and the things you need to consider to help you get started mastering the art of karate. It can be a rewarding endeavor that will bring benefits to you that you might have never considered.

Questions Are The Key

One of the first things to consider is what you want to get out of learning this martial art.

It’s important to set a goal for yourself to keep yourself motivated. Consider whether this is going to just be a hobby or do you want to compete. Your reason for learning this could be just a method to keep physically fit.

Whatever your reasons, it’s crucial to understand your motivation. I can’t stress how important it is to know because it will have some influence on the learning platform you choose.

Whatever your choice is, be committed to learning proper technique and style.

Give Me Some Space

Another facet to consider is your practice area and equipment. Make sure your practice area or home-dojo is free of clutter and has the space needed. You’ll need this space to practice punches, kicks, blocks, and even katas.

Using a full length mirror will also help to ensure that proper execution is used. Practicing in front of it will allow you to perfect the movements required.

The floor should not be slippery either. This art is practiced in bare feet so having some type of traction will help avoid falls and injuries. Using a carpeted area is a great choice.

If your space has tile or hardwood, buying a large carpet to practice on will ensure your safety as you’re learning. Once you have your practice space set up, wear loose fitting clothing and set a weekly practice schedule.

Keep Your Sights on the Bulls-eye!

Above all else, you must be committed to learning this martial art.

It takes hours and hours of practice. The best way to stay committed and focused is to set a weekly or daily practice schedule. This will allow you to learn the proper form and give you ample time to practice it.

Choosing Your Medium of Study

Now that you’ve set your goals and set up your practice area, what learning platform will you use?

There are many books available on the topic of Karate. It’s important that before you make that purchase, you consider a few things. When choosing a book to purchase, make sure there are a lot of pictures of the forms.

These pictures should have several different angles of each one to help you achieve the correct technique. There should also be clear instructions along with these pictures that are easy to understand.

When choosing a DVD, make sure to investigate the product before you buy it.

This can be done by reading product reviews. Often you can find a great DVD by paying attention to what others have to say about it who have actually used it.

Once you’ve chosen a DVD, make sure that it’s relatively easy to understand and follow. It should clearly demonstrate the skills and give a detailed explanation of how the moves are performed.

In addition to books and DVDs, there are many websites that offer free tutorials. Determine if the website gives comprehensive instructions for mastering this art.

In addition, there are some free tutorials that include online videos to demonstrate the punches, kicks, blocks, and katas.

Check Your Sources

Another important element to consider is where the training material came from, and are they affiliated with any organizations. This is crucial to finding a website that explains and demonstrates the karate techniques properly.

There are some free online tutorial sites that offer live-streamed classes. This type of site utilizes web-cams and scheduled classes through the internet.

As before, investigate the website and its contents before paying for the classes. The one advantage of this learning platform is the knowledge is presented by an actual instructor who can give feedback on the katas that are being learned in a real-time setting. This will help correct any errors in the forms that might arise.

Learning this art from a book, DVD, or website is usually a great starting point to learn the basics. However, if learning advanced techniques is your goal, taking a formal class or joining a club may be a better avenue to learn from.

Checking Out Local Clubs

There are local clubs that sponsors this type of training. There is often a small fee but it’s nominal, and most times affordable. Look for clubs that have affiliations to major organizations like IKO or USKA.

If the club is instructor led, check the instructor’s credentials as well. In addition, observe some of the training sessions to get an idea of the feel of the club. If it doesn’t feel right, don’t join.

Finally, taking formal classes is a great option as well. Like joining a club, it’s important to investigate the dojo, and its instructor.

Make sure the instructor is certified to teach and that the organization has affiliations with major karate organizations. Observe a few training sessions, and speak to the instructor to ensure that the classes are right for you.

One other consideration is price. Prices can vary from twenty dollars to one-hundred, depending on your location and the class.

In addition, if you join a class, have a positive attitude. If you take responsibility for your own progress and help others when you can, you will get more out of the experience. Also, be open to feedback and criticism as it helps to develop your techniques and skills.

It’s a Competition Against Yourself

Most importantly, never compare yourself to others in your class. You will learn at your own pace, and your progression is personal. You will develop your skills as your abilities allow.

Whatever your goals are and how you choose to learn it, this sport is beneficial in many ways.

Not only will you learn self-defense, but you will improve your cardio and endurance. Karate improves your focus and concentration, and will give you a renewed sense of self-confidence.

PS: Are you sabotaging yourself when it comes to learning karate? Find out more about it and how you can accelerate your karate skills in this article.

Karate has been known for its iconic teachers, often called masters, who train their students to become more proficient at this type of martial arts.

But does this mean that karate can only be learned in a class?

Or is it possible to learn karate at home?

Karate is a type of martial arts that helps people defend themselves without the use of weapons.

However, in modern times, it is no longer used as much for self defense but as a means to stay fit. And with the advent of modern technology, learning anything at home, including karate, is no longer impossible.

Below are some tips to help you learn karate at home.

Go through several videos or books on karate – and choose those that you can relate to

Self-instruction books or karate videos are going to help you do the moves correctly and properly. Scan the pages of karate books and go through a video first before you settle on what to buy. In the end, what matters most is getting the video and the book that you know you can follow with relative ease.

Set a schedule for learning karate at home

Lessons taken in classes have schedules which you should follow, so why should learning at home be any different? Set aside which day/s you prefer to learn karate. Because discipline is one of the many virtues you will learn while learning karate, setting a schedule – and sticking to it – will be one of the steps in disciplining yourself. A couple of days to about three days per week should suffice. As you get accustomed to this schedule, you can start practicing everyday. It can even replace your morning workout as karate is definitely quite physical.

Prepare an area that is ideal for karate practice

Your practice area should be flat, non-slippery, well-lit, and free from objects that you might bump your toe or knee into. Make sure you have a clock nearby so that you can check how long you have been practicing. Your practice area should also be barefoot-friendly; if you have wooden floors that might give you splinters, get a carpet or a rug.

To learn karate at home, remember that quality is better than quantity

It doesn’t matter if you learn just one move in one hour; what matters is that you learned it correctly. Don’t rush through the book you’re reading or the video you’re following. Remember that it’s harder to unlearn a wrongly executed move than to learn a new one. Take your time to perfect each move. Move on only when you are sure you got it down pat.

Stick to the basics before you jump to more complex moves

It would be so tempting to learn one complete kata (karate routine) to show off to your friends and family, but people who know karate will know you a fake when they see it. When you know how to punch, how to block attacks, and how to kick, the rest of the moves in the book will come easy – and will look more natural.

Martial Arts Karate can be traced back to Japan in the province of Okinawa. It is widely known as ‘te’ or in okinawan language ‘ti’ meaning ‘hand’, a form of combat that primary uses the parts of the body such as the hands, legs, elbows, knees as weapon instead of objects. It developed during the reign of King Satto in 1372 when the Chinese traders of the Ming Dynasty started to commence trading and established regular linkage. The Chinese traders did not only bring tradable materials but also shared their knowledge in martial arts. As the trading grew and became more intense, some Chinese families decided to migrate to Japan and created their own community known as Kumemura. Cultural trading also commenced which included the Chinese Martial Arts that further the development of non-weapon combat.

Martial Arts Karate is a combination of local Okinawan fighting style and Chinese martial arts. ‘Karate’, on the perspective of the Japanese, means ‘Empty Hand’, which can be associated with non-weapon combat. It further developed in the 1400 when the Shimazu clan invaded Okinawa upon request of Lord Tokugawa to punish the province of Okinawa for failure to send support and supplies during the Japanese conquest of China. The Shimazu banned the usage of any sort of weapons and martial arts thus martial arts karate practice and learning went underground or in secrecy. Satsuma Samurai were the only authorized persons to carry weapons. Violence plague the practice of karate as it is being associated as the only means of the Okinawan locals of defense against any attack and used as combat strategy in civil actions for liberty during those times.

As the years passes by and Shimazu rulers in Okinawa changed, Martial Arts Karate Schools where set-up openly but with constant monitoring and with limitations. The Shimazu reign ended in 1875, Martial Arts Karate was revealed and became more popular, and more practitioners engaged in these martial arts. Martial Arts Karate became one of the most popular fighting styles in Japan and even introduced throughout the whole world as Japanese immigrated to other countries and continued practicing Karate. Even establishing small-scale karate schools in those countries and accepting non – Japanese students.

Martial Arts Karate was developed by force due to the need of the Okinawan people to provide themselves means for defense and even offense to liberate themselves from the oppressive actions of their conquerors. This is a practical style of Martial Arts ever developed and practiced.

With the advent of technology, manual or strenuous physical activities were minimized and machines are invented to assist mankind in his day-to-day activities. The Internet greatly contributed on how people learn nowadays; there are lots of learning methods developed such as using audio-visual, electronic books, and even online materials for educational purposes.

Knowing how to defend yourself is a skill you have to learn. Karate is a type of martial arts, which is precisely what you need in these dire times when crime proliferates. To learn karate moves, you have first to learn the karate beliefs and ideologies.

Since karate is a martial art that uses only the hands and the feet to fight. The moves primarily involve these two body parts. You can learn karate moves by going to a gym or to a karate school or dojo and enrolling. You can also learn it online. Such is the beauty of technology and the dynamic world of gadgets and applications online.

You have first to learn the “moving basics” or Kihon–ido. Most of them involve stepping forward while you block with your hands. Here are some karate moves:

Hand blocks or age uke

You step forward to move your body and then block the attack with your hand. The speed of movement and strength of the block should be strong to incapacitate the attacker. The right and left arm come into play and hips rotation is crucial. The elbow and the arm are used to block the attack and the hip rotates as the arm moves. Therefore, if the right arm moves to the left, the hip rotates to the left too and vice versa.

Middle block or chudan uke

You block attacks in your mid portion with your hands and body movement. Learn karate moves by perfecting your chudan uke. As you step forward, you thrust your hand and breathe out of your mouth to force air out of your lungs. Some karate schools use the word “hah” or similar sounds. You block the attack by rotating your hip and then crossing your arm and elbow above the chest.

Lower block inside and outside

Learn karate moves when you block attacks to your lower body part with your hands. This is a closed-handed attack, together with the age uke, and the chudan uke. The right arm is at the sides and the left arm is tucked under the shoulder.

Open handed blocks

These include the double handed hooking block or toraguchi and others, which makes use of the open hand to block attacks to the upper, mid and lower body parts.

Kicking

To learn karate moves, you have to learn how to kick properly. You should practice kicking practices with a heavy bag to develop the strength of your kick. You can increase the height as you progress with your exercises.

Learn karate moves and learn self-defense. It is best to know how to defend yourself when needed.

Karate is a Martial Arts that requires physical strength, mental concentration and emotional maturity. It is used as an art comparing it with dancing, as a sport – either used for combat or tournaments, and most importantly for self defense as used by the Okinawan people of Japan. To master and develop techniques and skills in karate, a karateka or a practitioner of karate must be able to learn and go through the three (3) divisions of Karate Training.

The basics or fundamentals in karate training are referred to as Kihon which is also its literal meaning. Kihon is where karatekas learn proper stance or correct body posture and breathing and how to properly use the different parts of the body for defense and offense such as blocking, kicking, and punching. It is very important to master and practice Kihon as it is a prerequisite for advance training. Kihon can be compared to with playing sports such as baseball, where players learn how to be able to hit the ball with a bat and practice to master it before playing in an actual game. Kihon also teaches and promotes the proper attitude towards karate, with other people and with oneself.

Kata which means formal exercises in Japanese is one of the divisions of karate training. It is performed by a karateka which involves the proper execution of offensive or defensive actions against an imaginary opponent or with another karateka to counter a pre-determined offensive or defensive action and understand the purposes of such technique. It is practiced in a series of pattern to either learn how to defend oneself from or attack an opponent. Kata conditions the mind to immediately respond or determine appropriate actions to be taken to counter any strikes by the opponent.

Kumite literally means ‘meeting of the hands’ is known as sparring in karate training. It is where a karateka involves itself in an actual physical contact and test of wits, skills and techniques with an actual opponent. Kumite gives a karateka to prove his or her skills and techniques learned during kihon and kata, it also gauges the physical and mental capabilities of the player. Kumite determines whether a karateka is ready to compete in tournaments.

Karate Training, entails determination and concentration of a practitioner and thus must be ready to allot adequate time and effort in learning and practicing karate. You can start to enlist as a karateka ang enjoy learning the technique.

Kumite is another term for sparring or fighting in Karate. Karate Kumite is also known as “hand to hand” fighting, wherein, it can develop self-defense tactics or skills and serves as practice and sports for players. It also can develop self confidence, mind settings, physical conditioning, team spirit and discipline. It can also contribute to the over all good health of the player. It is the most important form of karate training as it is where a player realizes his or her strengths and weaknesses and identifies where to improve himself/herself. It also serves as the player’s venue for testing what she or he has learned and further develops skills and techniques depending on the situations experienced during the kumite.

Types of Karate Kumite:

Bogu Kumite – Sparring with armor. Adopts the knock down karate technique but with armor to provide safety for both players.

Stuctured Kumite – This type of sparring or Karate Kumite entails a predefined actions or strikes and defensive moves. One player shall be on offensive and the other player on defensive and will end with a very significant offensive strike.

Sports Kumite – A Karate Kumite type that is usually guided by the International Karate Federation or any internationally recognized karate organization rules and regulation wherein a referee will declare or announce points to players who were able to strike at their opponent. Players earning more points are declared the winner.

Jiyu Kumite – Same as the Sports Kumite but this allows the players the freedom to use any technique and level or power of the strikes but still within the delimitations set by recognized Karate organizations sponsoring or conducting the event.

Full Contact Karate Kumite – Awarding of points by the referee is different, instead of the usual strike or point system, pointing is rather based on the force exerted on the strike.

Varieties of Full Contact Karate Kumite:

Kick Boxing Karate – as a rule for this variant, you will only be declared a winner until the opponent is knocked out or knocked down.

Knock Down Karate – in this variant you will use some forceful techniques or very strong force technique to bring the opponent unto the ground.

The Karate Kumite plays a major role in the over all practice of Karate. It consumes mostly the time of the player because it serves as the bulk of the training activities, performance and skills evaluation of the player, coach, and the Karate School.

Karate fighting is widely known nowadays as people all around the world recognize the advantages gained from karate one type of martial arts. This activity is being held in different countries and is officially recognized as a sport.

Karate fighting is held between karate kata brackets, like the green belters, which are the first level of karate students. The brown belters have achieved a higher understanding of the art and have gained higher skills than the green belters have. The black belters are those who have achieved more or less a mastery of the arts of karate fighting.

Tournaments are held between schools with students belonging to the same belt competing with each other. It can be a “kata” where an individual performs moves or a karate fighting or “kumite” where groups or individuals compete with each other. In both of these types of karate fighting, landing the blows is prohibited and anyone violating this has deductions.

In the United States, karate fighting has slowly crept into the picture as parents enrolled their kids in karate schools. There is already a network of over 100-karate dojo and it is still growing. This popularity of karate fighting stemmed from the following facts.

- Students are taught self-discipline and self-control. They are not allowed to use karate at the slightest provocation from anyone. Self-control is one mark of a karateka.

- Karate fighting requires the student to perform physical exercises promoting muscular strength, muscle tone, dexterity, and physical fitness. Exercises involve muscle strengthening programs like hard arm movements, coupled with feet and body movements. Each discipline has some variations in their techniques. However, their goal is the same, development of mind, spirit, and body.

- Karate fighting emphasizes oneness of mind and body, stressing to the student that he/she has to think positively and be pure in thoughts.

- It is a worthwhile hobby that keeps people away from other destructive vices like cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. Students are not allowed to engage in these vices.

- Students are taught humility.

- Violence is not advocated and students learn that they could only use karate to defend themselves in instances where their lives are in danger.

These are all great reasons why karate is popular in the US and all over the world. Karate fighting observes these rules. Competitions are friendly and are meant to promote camaraderie between students and peers.
